What is BS 7910:2005?

BS 7910:2005 demonstrates how to assess the acceptability of flaws of structures and their components. Most emphasis is placed on welded fabrications in ferritic steels, austenitic steels and aluminium alloys, but the procedures can also be used to analyse defects in other metallic structures and non-welded components. These methods apply to the design, fabrication and operational phases of a structure’s life. This standard also covers the use of safety factors, the reliability of these factors and probabilistic methods.

How does it work?

BS 7910 looks at the types of flaw in structural steels, as well as the modes of failure and material damage mechanisms. It also defines the information that’s needed to do an accurate assessment. Assessments included in this standard cover fracture resistance, fatigue, flaws under creep conditions and other modes of failure.
