What is this standard about?

BS 6187:2011 gives good practice recommendations for the demolition (both full and partial) of facilities, including buildings and structures. It applies to demolition activities undertaken as part of structural refurbishment and also covers decommissioning.

Who is this standard for?

  • Demolition organizations
  • Clients and procurers
  • Contractors
  • Designers
  • Health and safety/training industries

Why should you use this standard?

BS 6187:2011 gives the most up-to-date recommendations for the proper and effective management of demolition processes and for maintaining structural stability, including the provision of temporary structural support where necessary. Use of the standard helps identify and establish responsibilities during all phases of the demolition process; manage environmental issues and health and safety hazards; carry out risk assessments and manage safe exclusion zones.

These recommendations for methods of, and techniques for, demolition and partial demolition have been updated to reflect current and developing good practices but also the revised edition is less prescriptive, allowing for innovative techniques and methods to be employed.

What’s changed since the last update?

  • BS 6187:2011 has been revised by experts to reflect advances in technology and equipment in the demolition industry and to bring it up to date with industry best practice
  • BS 6187:2011 supersedes BS 6187:2000, which is withdrawn
