This British Standard, a Part of the BS 1377 series, specifies general requirements for the testing of soils for civil engineering purposes and describes methods for the calibration of equipment and the preparation of test samples.

This standard covers calibration and checking of test equipment, preparation of disturbed samples for testing, assessment of soil grouping, mass of soil required for testing, moisture content determination, drying of soil, mechanical processing and preparation of samples for classification tests.
