  • Why has BS 15000 become BS ISO/IEC 20000?

As well as being used in the UK, BS 15000 is used by organizations all over the world just as if it were an international standard but without the gravitas that an international standard holds and the benefit of being managed and developed as an ISO/IEC document.

The development of BS 15000 into an international standard better meets the needs of an industry that is international in nature. It covers the aspects of IT service management that make up 80% of the total spend on IT by most organizations. An international standard provides a common understanding of the management of IT services worldwide.

  • What are the differences between BS 15000 and BS ISO/IEC 20000?

Whilst there has not been a wholesale change to the new standard, there are some differences:
   - Alignment of Part 1 and Part 2 structure
   - Standardization of terms such as ‘service provider’, ‘organization’, ‘business’ and ‘supplier’
   - Clarification of the wording of some requirements
   - Small number of changes to requirements.

 

  • How can I find out more about the changes?

BSI British Standards is publishing a book covering all the changes. The book will assist in making the transition from BS 15000 to BS ISO/IEC 20000 as simple as possible - The Differences between BS 15000 and ISO/IEC 20000.

 

  • What is the status of BS 15000 now that BS ISO/IEC 20000 has been published?

BS 15000 is withdrawn as it is no longer be a valid standard.

 

  • What is the difference between BS ISO/IEC 20000 and ISO/IEC 20000?

ISO/IEC 20000 is the “base” international standard. BS ISO/IEC 20000 is the version adopted and published by the UK National Standards Body, BSI. The content is identical. In addition the BS version will also include a national forward and national annex which will have references to ITIL and related BSI publications - this information is not available in any other version of the ISO/IEC 20000 standard.
