The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has introduced nine new generic top level domains (gTLDs) for registration.
Companies and individuals can now apply for URLs ending in .guru, .ventures, .camera, .clothing, .singles, .lighting, .holdings, .voyage and .equipment, all of which will be available by the end of January 2014.
ICANN's latest announcement comes after non-Latin domains were introduced last month, with a new option in Arabic, one in Chinese and two in Russian.
Additionally, the UK is also set to benefit from .uk, instead of the longer .co.uk, and .london options. Over the upcoming years, ICANN is planning to introduce around 1,400 new gTLDs.
Whereas .uk and .london serve regional purposes, the corporation's latest wave of internet addresses can prove useful for individual companies, as the domains refer to specific areas of interest. For instance, .clothing will obviously prove important for those in the business, such as retailers and designers.
Speaking to the BBC, project director for ICANN's Trademark Clearinghouse Jan Corstens said: "From fashion brands and dating agencies, to spiritual healers and cycle advocates, the launch of these new domains mean consumers can easily find specific content within each extension, while businesses will benefit from a stronger and more relevant online proposition."
As part of this expansion, ICANN is inviting companies to submit proposals for new gTLDs. Requests received so far include generic suffixes such as .ninja, as well as branded addresses along the lines of .google and .bbc, which could possibly be set aside for the specific business.
In total, around 700 generic names are expected, including .shop, .site and .hotel. These do not involve exclusive trademarks, making them more widely available for any relevant or interested parties.
As part of owning and operating a gTLD, ICANN expects a number of factors to be met - notably, it predicts such domain owners to provide WHOIS data, background information and queries on the website which can prove useful in maintaining and fixing various areas into a secure escrow account.
The organization plans to introduce ten new domains each week.
