Financial services organizations are the most trusted in the UK in terms of data protection, new research shows.
A study for internet security specialist Symantec shows that banks and building societies secured the highest trust score when it comes to looking after personal details, with 55 per cent of respondents giving the sector a high rating.
Finance firms polled ahead of the public sector and internet retailers in the survey by YouGov of 2,000 adults in Britain, with ten per cent of respondents stating the "completely" trust banks to keep information safe.
However, other sectors performed poorly and Sian John, Symantec Security Strategist, noted that some data handlers have problems with consumer trust.
"The amount of information firms handle each day is growing at an astonishing rate, so organizations can't afford to be seen as untrustworthy," she advised.
In related news, research by Dell has suggested that the growing consumerization of IT has led to growing fears about data security, particularly in relation to personal devices being used in the workplace.
