The proportion of machine-to-machine (M2M) connected devices accounted for by smart metering will reach 40 per cent by 2016.
This is the forecast made by Juniper Research, which has predicted the market will expand strongly to around 400 million such gadgets within five years, with companies specializing in both connectivity and services expected to benefit most.
According to a study of the M2M sector by the firm, the volume of smart meter deployment will push up revenues in the sector, despite the technology providing lower profits per connection than other such devices.
Anthony Cox, Juniper Research Associate Analyst, stated: "High device numbers in the smart metering area of the M2M market will mean that smart metering will remain an important corner stone of the M2M industry."
The data follows a report from IMS Research suggesting that shipments of smart photovoltaic inverters will expand from 20 per cent to almost 60 per cent of the market by 2015 as a result of increasing grid integration.
