Scientists use regenerative medicine to develop artificial teeth

Research has been carried out by experts in Japan that has resulted in the creation of artificial teeth.

A team from the Tokyo University of Science has discovered a way of employing stem cells to grow dentures.

Reported in the journal PLoS ONE, the regenerative medicine breakthrough was made using cells from mice to create units of teeth with connective nerve fibres that could be attached to jaw bones and eventually fused with them.

According to the researchers, the innovative new technique could be used in the future to assist people in replacing dentures that have been lost or damaged.

Masamitsu Oshima, an Assistant Professor at the university's Research Institute for Science and Technology, stated: "The bioengineered teeth were fully functional, there was no trouble (with) biting and eating food after transplantation."

In the UK, the Government announced this week that it is investing £4 million in regenerative medicine, comprising funding to improve donor matching and increase umbilical cord blood collection capabilities.
