The development of electric cars by manufacturer Renault has become the focus of industrial espionage, according to the company.
Following an investigation into actions that placed its assets at risk, three senior members of staff have been suspended by the firm as a result of the suspected leak of confidential information.
However, accusations levelled against China about a possible industrial espionage ring have been denied by the country's authorities and the Renault executives have insisted they are innocent of the charges.
According to the French Industry Minister, Eric Besson, the country is in the midst of an "economic war", with the threat of intellectual property theft against businesses growing.
He told a French radio station there is likely to be an increase in issues such as corporate espionage and data theft over the coming years.
A joint engineering venture between Renault and Nissan in Japan is focusing on the development of electric vehicles for the international market.
The Renault incident follows similar problems experienced by General Motors and Ford, which saw intellectual property theft benefit their competitors and cost them money.
