Specification for overseas moving services and furniture removal activities
If you offer overseas removal services, this new standard has been written for the removals industry.
What’s the standard for and how will it help?
The aim of BS 8564 is to offer a common specification for any firm offering overseas removal services. It provides a benchmark to reassure anyone employing those services. It is intended to offer reassurance that suppliers reach a specific level of service when carrying out removal activities.
We’re hoping that BS 8564 will give service providers an affordable way to benchmark their services. Following the standard would indicate a level of professionalism, trained personnel and that the appropriate vetting and security processes were in place. These would all help firms to compete and tender for business, as well as meeting their customers’ expectations.
It offers removal firms an alternative to the costly accreditation offered by other organisations. BS 8564 would be ideal for smaller removal companies and businesses developing into this area, who might struggle to provide assurance to clients.
Tens of thousands of overseas removals are carried out each year without any form of standardisation or uniformity of service. There is no licensing structure or any other means by which professional high quality contractors may set themselves apart from the casual "man with van".
With an increasing emphasis on security and anti-terrorism measures in international transport, this standard should have wide-ranging appeal, and enhance awareness of security in the supply chain.
Why was this standard written?
It was developed with industry stakeholders and through public consultation, so we hope the concerns, issues and comments that were raised have been addressed in the making of this standard. BSI has aimed to produce a standard that offers real value to both industry and consumer.
