What is BS EN 81-2:1998+A3:2009?

BS EN 81-2:1998+A3:2009 looks at the safety rules for the construction and installation of new lifts and hydraulically operated devices. These include goods lifts, passenger lifts and service lifts. The standard also covers hydraulic lifts serving defined landing levels, with a car designed to transport people and goods. This car will normally be suspended by jacks, ropes or chains and move between guide rails. BS EN 81-2 has been developed to help organizations put the right safety measures in place to protect people and goods from injury or damage.

How does it work?

BS EN 81-2:1998+A3:2009 covers lift wells, machinery and pulley spaces, landing doors, as well as cars and their balancing weight. This standard also sets the benchmark for suspension, guide rails, buffers and final limit switches. Other topics include electric installations and appliances, protection against electric faults, notices, markings and examinations and tests.

Who should buy it?

  • Anyone responsible for the installation and maintenance of lifts
  • Manufacturers of lifts and hydraulically operated devices
  • Quality assessors
  • Regulatory bodies
  • Building managers
  • Health and safety officers
