What is BS 5839-6:2004?

BS 5839 gives best-practice recommendations for the design and installation of fire alarms and fire detectors in buildings. This includes domestic facilities designed to accommodate a single family. The standard covers both new and existing buildings, and looks at how changes in technology, custom and practice, and the guidance that supports building regulations, influence fire safety. The specifications set out in BS 5839 refer mainly to fire detection and fire alarm systems installed to ensure life safety.

How does it work?

BS 5839 specifies the requirements to do an accurate fire risk assessment, before looking at alarm system components and the monitoring of circuits. This standard also covers the types of fire detectors, their position, and fire alarm warnings for people who are hard of hearing or deaf. Other topics include electric wiring systems, power supplies, control equipment and maintenance.

Who should buy it?

  • Architects
  • Building professionals
  • Enforcing authorities
  • Facility managers
  • Contractors responsible for fire alarms and smoke detectors
