Ensure that your electrical installations conform to the latest safety guidelines from the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as codified in BS 7671, Requirements for Electrical Installations. This is especially important as the Building Regulations Part P Electrical Safety now applies to all fixed electrical installations (for operation at low voltage or extra-low voltage) that are not controlled by the Electricity Supply Regulations 1988 or the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

From 1 January 2005, people carrying out electrical work in homes and gardens in England and Wales will have to follow the new rules in the Building Regulations. Part P of the Building Regulations is intended to increase the safety of households by improving the design, installation, inspection and testing of electrical installations in dwellings when these installations are being newly built, extended or altered. A new edition of AD-P came into effect on 6 April 2006.

There was a two-year overlap period during which cables in the old colours or new colours (but not both) could be used. After 31 March 2006 only those new installations that use the new colour coding will conform to BS 7671.

There is no requirement to change existing installations and the amendment provides a new appendix giving guidance on connecting extensions or modifications that are wired in the new colours, to installations that were wired in the old colours.
