BSI launches work on new standards on smart metering
The European Commission has prepared a standardization mandate to the main European Standard Organisations, CEN/CENELEC/ETSI, for the creation of European Standards for an open architecture for utility meters enabling interoperability and to improve customer awareness of energy consumption.
CEN/CENELEC/ETSI — Smart Meter-Co-ordination Group
CEN/CENELEC/ ETSI have set up a co-ordination group (SM-CG) to 'manage' the work through European Standards Organizations' existing technical committees. The SM-CG comprises representatives of the appropriate technical committees and invited European technical liaison organizations.
BSI ad hoc group for SM-CG
BSI is setting up a mirror group, inviting UK-based SM-CG members, representatives of interested BSI national technical committees and other interested parties to participate. The aim will be to communicate SM‑CG matters to the national committees and to ensure that UK-based members are aware of concerns emanating from BSI committees. It is intended to call a first meeting in July.
BSI technical committees
BSI has an active technical committee for all those European committees identified by CEN/CENELEC/ETSI. BSI invites participation in its committees on the usual basis of membership of BSI committees as governed by BS 0 — A standard for standards.
CEN/TC 295 and BSI mirror committee
BSI is also planning to reconstitute BSI committee PEL/894 — Remote meter reading to mirror the work of CEN/TC 294 — Communication systems for meters and remote reading of meters which might be appropriate for some of the key work, if the SM-CG so delegates it.
DECC consultation
On May 11 DECC launched a consultation on Smart Metering for Electricity and Gas. BSI plans to submit a response and the views of the members of relevant BSI technical committees are invited to feed into BSI’s consolidated response.

Please contact Bernard Shelley if you are interested in the work of the BSI mirror group for the SM-CG or if have any comments on the DECC consultation, please send them to us by the end of June.
