What is this PAS about?
PAS 43 was developed in response to an independent review jointly commissioned by the AA and RAC into the safety of those working on motorway hard shoulders and the verges of high speed carriageways. It contains requirements for the management of road recovery operations with the aim of increasing safety and promoting best practice.
Who is this PAS for?
It’s used by operators and purchasers of assistance services. The courts and the Health & Safety Executive also use it as a benchmark for safe roadside working practices.

Why should you use this PAS?
It specifies requirements for minimizing the safety risks to roadside assistance providers. It covers standards for the safe operation of vehicle breakdown, recovery and removal by roadside assistance providers.
What’s changed since the last update?
PAS 43:2015 is the sixth revision of this PAS, which is reviewed and republished approximately every two years. This edition includes additions and changes in areas which stakeholders felt needed clarification or strengthening. It also includes measures to improve the consistency with which third-parties certify or inspect operators of the PAS.
