BS 5306-9:2015 Fire extinguishing installations and equipment on premises. Recharging of portable fire extinguishers. Code of practice
What is BS 5306-9?
This new part of the BS 5306 series brings together and updates the two parts of BS 6643, providing all the recommendations for the recharging of portable fire extinguishers in a single standard
It provides key information to help service engineers to correctly service portable fire extinguishers. It also enables building owners to ensure that there is effective fire sighting provisions in their buildings.
BS 5306-9 includes recommendations for:
- Recharging of portable fire extinguishers
- Components, gas cartridges, propellants and refill extinguishing media for extinguishers
BS 5306-9 provides essential information on portable fire extinguishing service, not available in any other standard. It’s important to assist fire extinguishing service companies and end users to fulfil the obligations placed on them by the Fire Safety Order. It also allows to service and maintain fire extinguishers in regular conditions as when first installed.
Who should use BS BS 5306-9?
BS 5306-9 is relevant to:
- Public and private sector building owners
- Sprinkler design
- Installation and maintenance companies
- Authorities having jurisdiction
- Insurance industry
This part of BS 5306 overtakes BS 6643-1:1985 and BS 6643-2:1985, which are withdrawn.
Bringing two standards into a new edition of the BS 5306 series means that all the requirements for the service and maintenance of the portable fire extinguishers can be found within a single BS suite of standards. BS 5306 series is widely recognised by industry and it is a natural fit for auditors to refer to. Currently, European Committee for Standardization hasn’t standards that address the domestic and residential sprinkler market.
