For safety when using machinery, there should always be an emergency stop button device available in case of an emergency.
BS EN ISO 13850:2015 covers functional requirements and design principles for the stop function on most forms of machinery. It takes into account the requirements of the European Machinery Directive, and it is applicable whatever type of energy is used to perform the stop function.
ISO 13850 has now been revised to update normative references. Users will benefit from:
- Increased confidence in the performance of emergency stops
- Reduced differences between machines made in different countries
It does not apply to hand-held or hand-operated machines, or those where an emergency stop would not reduce the risk; nor does it deal with functions such as reversal or limitation of motion, deflection, shielding, braking or disconnecting.
The revised standard will be an asset for machine manufacturers, refurbishers and modifiers, control system designers, approval bodies and enforcement bodies, as well as manufacturers and resellers of components for emergency stop systems.
