What is BS EN 13674-1:2011?
BS EN 13674-1 explains the concepts and reasoning involved when manufacturing railway tracks, rails and railway fixed equipment. Recognising EN ISO 9001, this standard is performance based. That means manufacturers have to offer the latest, proven technology to ensure the quality and safety of their steels, such as manganese steels and heat-treatable steels. BS EN 13674-1 consists of two main parts: qualifying testing and acceptance testing. The qualifying tests specifically look at performance requirements, while the acceptance tests control certain features of the rails and steels.
How does it work?
As a performance-based standard, BS EN 13674-1 covers safety implications and addresses modern production technology, as well as today’s requirements of high speed railways. It also includes a set of qualifying criteria that all manufacturers should meet at the time of tendering. Topics include chemical composition, the mechanical properties of materials and tolerances, while the qualifying tests look at fracture toughness and fatigue testing. BS EN 13674-1 also looks at hardness and flatness measurements.
Who should buy it?
