Executive summary

Qualification requirements of welders for fusion welding of aluminium and aluminium alloys.

Abstract

This International Standard specifies the requirements for qualification of welders for fusion welding of aluminium and aluminium alloys.

It provides a set of technical rules for systematic qualification of welders, which are independent of product type, location and examiner/examining body.

When qualifying welders, the emphasis is placed on the welder's ability to manually manipulate the welding torch and thereby produce a weld of acceptable quality.

The welding processes referred to in this standard include those fusion welding processes which are designated as manual or partly mechanized welding.

The principle of this standard is that a qualification test qualifies the welder not only for the conditions used in the test, but also for all joints which are considered to weld easier on the presumption that the welder has received a particular training and/or has industrial practice within the range of qualification.

BS EN ISO 9606-2:2004 specifies the requirements for qualification of welders for fusion welding of aluminium and aluminium alloys. It provides a set of technical rules for systematic qualification of welders that are independent of product type, location and examiner/examining body.

By following the guidelines in this standard you will be able to verify the skill of your welders and provide them with the relevant designation and qualification once they have passed the test. At the same time, you can be safe in the knowledge that qualified welders - who can follow verbal and written instructions, and show the ability to manually manipulate the relevant welding tools - will be handling your products ensuring that they meet your production quality standards. Their welding skills are key to meeting your quality standards avoiding unnecessary wastage, recalls and eliminating expensive production times.

The welding processes referred to in this standard include those fusion-welding processes that are designated as manual or partly mechanized welding. It does not qualify fully mechanized and automated welding processes.
