Printing

As a printer your clients want perfect prints, on time and on budget. There are many steps involved in the printing process, and you need to master all of them to ensure your business is a success.

Printing standards can help you get perfect colour, accurate proofs, smooth the pre-press process, and ensure good process control.

Using standards can also help you win clients and maintain good relationships with suppliers, because people trust companies that use standards.

To get started, have a look at some of these key standards:

Getting Started With Printing Standards

Over the decades, printing has continuously moved on from being a "craft" to a "manufacturing process". Although some elements of craft, skill and judgement remain, the huge increase in the volume of printed material particularly that printed in colour has come about from new technologies and more efficiency in the workplace. For example, files for printing can now be produced by anyone with a computer thanks to the adoption of standards - originally with Postscript and now PDF.

Printers routinely use a quality system, eg. ISO 9001 procedures, and now many are looking to adopt and integrate technical printing standards into these procedures. Why? - because the more savvy print buyers are asking their work to be produced to meet ISO standards such as ISO 12647-2. By specifying that their work should be produced to these standards, the print buyer:

  • has more confidence that the final printed product will be acceptable
  • knows that repeat orders will be consistent
  • gets consistency between jobs when work has to be produced at several different printers
  • has much simpler communication between the file originator and the printer.

What's in it for the printer?

  • Reduction in make-ready time and materials,
  • Simpler compliance to customer requirements
  • Easier internal and external communications
  • Greater productivity
  • Improved repeatability and consistency
  • Access to global markets as standards are International and are a common "language"

Published printing standards detail most aspects of print including proofing, printing, colour viewing and measurement.
